Ryan's bloggin
I thought that this unit would be interesting when I first heard we were going to be covering it. My best friend growing up was Mexican. My best friend I've made at college is also Mexican. They come from two totally different places as my best friend here at Western is originally from Long Beach, CA and my best friend from home is from my hometown of Greenville. I think my experience with them will be a lot different than this unit though. About the only thing hispanic they are both proud of is their Tequila intake. They don't ever act like it's an issue, them being Mexican. They are both proud of it, but obviously it doesn't effect their relationship with a white boy like myself. I think they both look at being mexican in the way that I look at being german. It's part of their heritage, but it's not a huge deal. What I like about my relationship with both of them is that the idea of race has never been an issue. It's not like there has ever been a barrier between us. I think if you can get students to just be open-minded about the issue, you can help them realize how similar you are to some people, regardless of who they are or where they grew up.
